When visiting Ninh Binh, a picturesque province in Vietnam, it's important to consider how you'll manage your finances during your stay. Here’s a guide to help you understand the use of credit and debit cards in this region.
Credit/Debit Card Acceptance
  1. Hotels and Larger Restaurants: Many hotels, especially those catering to international tourists, accept major credit and debit cards. Larger restaurants in tourist areas may also have card payment facilities. However, it's always a good idea to check in advance.
  2. Smaller Establishments: In smaller, local establishments such as street vendors, small shops, and traditional markets, cash is usually the preferred method of payment. These places often do not have the infrastructure to process card payments.
  3. ATMs Availability: There are several ATMs in Ninh Binh where you can withdraw cash using your credit or debit card. Make sure your card is compatible with international ATM networks (such as Visa or MasterCard) and be aware of any foreign transaction fees your bank might charge.
  4. Currency: The local currency is the Vietnamese Dong (VND). Having cash on hand is useful, especially for small purchases or in rural areas where card payments are not an option.
Tips for Using Cards
  • Notify Your Bank: Before traveling, inform your bank about your trip to avoid any potential blocks on your card due to suspicious activity.
  • Check Fees: Be aware of any fees associated with international transactions or ATM withdrawals.
  • Safety: Keep your cards secure and try to use ATMs located in well-lit and busy areas to avoid any potential security issues.
By understanding these aspects, you can enjoy a smoother financial experience while exploring the beauty and culture of Ninh Binh.

When visiting Hoi An, a picturesque city in Vietnam known for its ancient town and vibrant culture, you might wonder about the local customs, including tipping. Here’s what you need to know:
General Guidelines
  1. Restaurants: Tipping in restaurants is not mandatory, but it is appreciated. A small tip of around 5-10% of the bill can be given if you are satisfied with the service.
  2. Hotels: In hotels, tipping is not obligatory, but it is a nice gesture to leave a small amount for housekeepers. You might also consider tipping bellboys or other staff who assist you during your stay.
  3. Taxis and Transport: For taxi drivers, rounding up the fare to the nearest 10,000 VND is a common practice. If a driver provides excellent service, you can add a little extra.
  4. Tour Guides: If you take a guided tour, tipping is often expected and appreciated. A typical tip ranges from 50,000 to 100,000 VND per day, depending on the length and quality of the tour.
  5. Spas and Salons: In these establishments, a tip of 5-10% of the service cost is a polite way to show appreciation for good service.
Cultural Considerations
While tipping is not a traditional Vietnamese custom, it has become more common due to the influence of tourists. Always consider the level of service and your own comfort when deciding on a tip. Remember that even a small amount can make a difference to service workers in Hoi An.
By following these guidelines, you can show appreciation for good service while being respectful of local customs. Enjoy your time in Hoi An!

Hue, the former imperial capital of Vietnam, offers a rich tapestry of history and culture. Exploring this vibrant city can be a delightful experience with its array of transportation options. Here’s a guide to help you navigate Hue with ease.
1. Walking
Hue is a relatively small city, making walking a feasible option for exploring its central attractions. Walking allows you to soak in the city’s atmosphere and discover hidden gems at your own pace. Key sites such as the Imperial City and the Perfume River are easily accessible by foot.
2. Bicycle
Renting a bicycle is a popular choice for both locals and tourists. It’s an eco-friendly way to explore and allows you to cover more ground than walking. Many hotels and guesthouses offer bicycle rentals. Cycling along the Perfume River or through the countryside can be a particularly scenic experience.
3. Cyclo
For a more leisurely mode of transport, consider hiring a cyclo. These traditional cycle rickshaws offer a unique way to see the city. Cyclos are ideal for short distances and are often used for sightseeing tours around the city’s historical landmarks.
4. Motorbike
For those who crave a bit more adventure, renting a motorbike is an excellent option. It provides the freedom to explore at your own pace and venture further afield, such as to the famous Thien Mu Pagoda. Ensure you have a valid driver's license and are comfortable with Vietnamese traffic conditions before opting for this mode of transport.
5. Taxi
Taxis in Hue are a convenient option, especially for longer distances or when traveling with luggage. Make sure to use reputable companies like Mai Linh or Vinasun, and insist on using the meter to avoid overcharging.
6. Grab
Grab, a popular ride-hailing app in Southeast Asia, operates in Hue and offers both car and motorbike options. This service is convenient and often cheaper than traditional taxis. Download the app to easily book rides throughout your stay.
7. Bus
Hue’s local bus system is an affordable way to travel between the city and surrounding areas. Although not as comfortable as other options, it’s a great way to experience local life. Buses connect major tourist sites and often provide a fascinating insight into daily Vietnamese culture.
8. Boat
Don’t miss the chance to travel by boat on the Perfume River. River cruises offer a relaxing way to enjoy Hue’s scenic beauty and often include stops at historical sites and pagodas. You can choose from day trips or even sunset cruises for a memorable experience.
With these diverse transportation options, getting around Hue can be both practical and enjoyable. Whether you prefer the independence of a motorbike or the leisure of a cyclo ride, Hue awaits your exploration.

When shopping in Saigon, both cash and card have their advantages and potential drawbacks. Here are some factors to consider when deciding which payment method might be best for you:
  1. Acceptance While credit cards are accepted in many places, especially in malls, larger stores, and hotels, smaller shops, street vendors, and local markets often prefer cash. It's always a good idea to carry some local currency for such situations.
  2. Convenience Using a card can be more convenient for larger transactions or when you don't want to carry a lot of cash. However, cash transactions are often quicker and can help avoid card processing fees that some places might charge.
  3. Security Cards offer a level of security that cash does not, as they can be canceled if lost or stolen, while cash is gone for good if misplaced. However, be cautious of card skimming and ensure that transactions are processed in front of you.
  4. Exchange Rates When using a card, be aware that your bank may charge foreign transaction fees or offer less favorable exchange rates. In contrast, exchanging currency beforehand or withdrawing local currency from ATMs can sometimes provide better rates.
  5. Budgeting Cash can help manage spending more effectively as it limits purchases to the amount on hand. On the other hand, cards can lead to overspending due to their ease of use.
In conclusion, both cash and card have their place when shopping in Saigon. It's wise to carry a mix of both to ensure flexibility and convenience during your shopping adventures.

The temple is about 90 kilometers from Ho Chi Minh City, and many tours offer a combined visit to both the Cu Chi Tunnels and the Cao Dai Temple.
2. Mekong Delta
For those interested in exploring Vietnam's lush landscapes, the Mekong Delta is an excellent choice. While it requires a bit more travel time, some tour operators offer packages that include both the Cu Chi Tunnels and a glimpse of the Mekong Delta. Visitors can enjoy a boat ride, visit local markets, and experience the rich agricultural life of the delta.
3. Ho Chi Minh City
After exploring the Cu Chi Tunnels, you can return to Ho Chi Minh City and explore some of its top attractions. Consider visiting the War Remnants Museum or the Reunification Palace for more historical insights. The bustling Ben Thanh Market and the beautiful Notre-Dame Cathedral Basilica of Saigon are also great options for those interested in culture and architecture.
4. Local Villages
For a more intimate experience, consider visiting nearby villages to see daily life in rural Vietnam. Some tours include visits to local craft workshops, where you can learn about traditional Vietnamese crafts and even try your hand at some.
Tips for Planning Your Trip
  • Start Early: Begin your day early to maximize your time, especially if you're combining multiple attractions.
  • Book a Guided Tour: Joining a guided tour can simplify logistics and provide valuable insights from knowledgeable guides.
  • Check Opening Hours: Ensure that all destinations are open on the day of your visit to avoid any disappointments.
  • Pack Essentials: Bring water, snacks, and comfortable clothing suitable for exploration and the climate.
