Yes, many people in Hanoi, especially in urban areas and tourist spots, understand and speak English. The level of proficiency can vary widely, with younger generations and those working in the tourism, hospitality, and business sectors typically having better English skills. English is taught in schools, and there are numerous English language centers where people can improve their proficiency. However, in more rural areas, English might not be as commonly understood. It's always a good idea to learn a few basic Vietnamese phrases to help with communication and show respect for the local culture.

Booking a Ha Long Bay cruise in advance is highly recommended, especially if you plan to visit during peak tourist seasons or have specific preferences for your cruise experience. Here are some general guidelines to help you:
  1. Peak Season (October to April): This is when the weather is most favorable, and tourist demand is at its highest. For this period, you should aim to book your cruise at least 3 to 6 months in advance to secure your preferred dates, cabin type, and itinerary.
  2. Shoulder Season (May and September): During these months, the weather is still relatively good, but there are fewer tourists compared to peak season. Booking 2 to 3 months in advance should be sufficient.
  3. Off-Season (June to August): This is the rainy season in Ha Long Bay, which might deter some tourists. While you might find more availability, it’s still a good idea to book 1 to 2 months in advance, especially if you have specific cruise operators in mind.
  4. Holiday Periods: If you are planning to visit during Vietnamese holidays or major international holidays (such as Christmas and New Year), consider booking even earlier, as these times can see a spike in local and international tourists.
  5. Last-Minute Bookings: If you’re flexible with your dates and cruise options, you might find good deals on last-minute bookings. However, this approach is riskier and might limit your choices.
By booking in advance, you can ensure a more enjoyable and stress-free experience, with a wider range of options to choose from.

The currency used in Ninh Binh, as well as the rest of Vietnam, is the Vietnamese Dong (VND). The Dong is symbolized as "₫" and is available in both coins and banknotes. The exchange rate can fluctuate, so it's a good idea to check the current rate before traveling.
